Report by Save Chinese Cultural Center Coalition
Today, Superior Court Judge Christopher Coury heard arguments by the City of Phoenix and 668 North LLC on why each party should be dismissed from CJ Design’s zoning case, CV 2018-000752.
CJ Design’s attorney, Carol Pilch, explained to the Judge that this case is concerned only with whether the City of Phoenix Zoning Department had followed proper procedure when it issued a re-roofing permit to 668 North, LLC. The Court granted Ms. Pilch time to amend CJ Design’s complaint to include a question regarding the continued use of the temporary construction fence surrounding the Chinese Cultural Center.
Ms. Pilch asked the Court to declare 668 North’s roof permit null and void. She also asked the Court to direct the Zoning Department to review 668 North’s proposed remodel of the Chinese Cultural Center pursuant to either the Developmental Site Plan of record or a new site plan.
Judge Coury took the matter under advisement and will render a decision in the near future.

Washington, DC – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates calls on Congress to act to remove the citizenship question from the 2020 Census.
On Tuesday morning, Judge Jesse Furman in the Southern District of New York Court ruled that it was a violation of the Administrative Procedures Act to add a citizenship question. While he noted that challengers have been unable to prove that the citizenship question intends to discriminate against noncitizens, he pointed out Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’ ask for this question an “egregious” violation.
“As Judge Furman states in his ruling, the ‘integrity of the census is a matter of national importance’ and the citizenship question would very likely harm this integrity because of the lack of testing and research behind it,” says Roland Hwang, OCA National Vice President of Public Affairs. “There are increasing sentiments to not participate or complete the survey for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community due to the fear and distrust of why a citizenship question is even required when it has not been used since the 1950s. OCA implores Congress to stop this misguided policy and remove the citizenship question from the 2020 Census.”
OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).
